U.N. Ambassador
President-elect Donald Trump has chosen Rep. Elise Stefanik of the House to serve as U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, offering her the role after identifying her as a resilient, savvy, ‘America First’ advocate. The New York representative, currently holding the highest-ranking female position in the House Republican party, has been a staunch backer of Trump for many years and was even speculated to be a prospective vice presidential candidate during the election. Assuming her nomination is confirmed by the Senate, in all likelihood, she will be ceding her safely-held Republican congressional seat; per New York state regulations, Governor Kathy Hochul must designate a special election within 10 days of the seat becoming vacant.
Elise Stefanik
Elise Stefanik rocketed into Trump’s inner circle in recent years, showing tremendous dedication during the impeachment hearings in 2019 when she emerged as one of Trump’s most forceful defenders. As a vocal critic of the 2020 election results, Stefanik was not afraid to propagate election falsehoods and express support for legal challenges that sought to annul President Biden’s victory. Her rise to power came in 2021 when she replaced Liz Cheney as House Republican Conference Chair after Cheney was dismissed due to her criticism of Trump’s ideology. Stefanik undoubtedly demonstrated her unwavering loyalty to Trump’s cause, a trait that likely played a key role in her present nomination as U.S. ambassador to the U.N.
Israel support
Rep. Elise Stefanik, known for her steadfast support of Israel and her public denouncement of antisemitism, actively voiced her strong stance in congressional hearings addressing antisemitic episodes on college campuses in the winter of last year. During the hearings, she notably interrogated the presidents of the University of Pennsylvania and Harvard. Additionally, she was a prominent figure during the Gaza war, vehemently defending Israel and calling for the defunding of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees, thereby earning recognition as an influential pro-Israel voice in Washington.
Trump’s Cabinet
The choice of Rep. Elise Stefanik for the U.N. ambassador role reflects Trump’s continued focus on building a Cabinet filled with loyalists. Former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley, a significant adversary of Trump during the Republican primary of 2024, had previously held the position of U.N. ambassador during Trump’s first term. Although there were rumors of her making a return, Trump indicated on various posts that Haley won’t be joining his administration again.
